| | To meet the hazardous area classification we propose to use an open type compressor with a certified TEFC motor, purged electrical enclosure together with approved electrical control devices, explosion proof junction boxes with seals, and approved control devices. | |

Problem: there are times when electrical equipment must be installed in a classified hazardous location but protection methods such as intrinsic safety or explosion-proof boxes are unsuitable or impractical. Solution: applying a source of clean air or inert gas at a positive pressure to an equipment enclosure prevents the ingress of flammable gases and dust. Thus, the hazard classification of the atmosphere inside the enclosure may be reduced. Standards have been established which determine the degree of reduction, and stipulate initial purging volume changes, minimum maintained pressure differential, and system status indication. Alarm initiation and power interruption in the event of pressure loss are mandated for some situations. |

| Design Conditions Electrical controls shall be housed in a purged NEMA 4 enclosure or have explosion proof junction boxes. The type Z purging unit requires a supply of clean dry air insert gas at a rate of 8 scfm at 80 psi or our air changes prior to energizing the air electrical control circuit. Electrical wiring would be in accordance with N.E.C. for Class 1, Div. 2 group C&D at area classification. A hazardous area certificate would be provided for each motor of our supply. |
